Originating from Southern Germany in the latter part of the 19th century, the Miniature Schnauzer's actual heritage is unclear, but the breed is considered to have been bred from the black poodle, rough coated black and tan terrier, spitz and pinscher.

Black & silver, black, and pepper & salt are the commonest colours. Many of us in the breed look upon the pepper & salt as being the true colour, and these look particularly smart in the show ring. Recently, pure white has appeared on the scene. Traditionally docked, they are now being seen with tails. Ears should be v shaped and set high.

Being compact, long lived and extremely affable, they make ideal pets and are happy to live with other breeds. They are very good with children, have endless energy, and love to be involved in everything. As escape artists, they require a secure garden, and can sometimes be very vocal!

If a family dog, grooming may be done by either hand stripping or clippering, but beard and leg featherings must be groomed regularly as they become easily matted. When clippered, the coat loses its true colour and texture, becoming soft and grey. They do not moult. If competing in the ring, it takes time and effort to keep them in show condition as only hand stripping and scissor work should be used.

Feeding is not a problem as they love food but can put on weight quickly. There are health issues regarding eyes, and they are susceptible to enteritis.

If you feel a Mini Schnauzer is the dog for you, you cannot do better than read Peter Newman's excellent book "Miniature Schnauzers Today". We are grateful to him for allowing us to use photographs of Ch Sonshea Scarlet Streamers at Risepark, our boys' mother, and Ch Risepark Our Miss Daisy. Both are excellent examples of the breed, as too is Risepark Favourite Fella.
